The emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has warned that if President Buhari is not careful and does not retrace his steps, he runs the risk of ending up like the former president, Goodluck Jonathan.

Advice To All Freshers In Nigeria Tertiary Institutions

Budget padding: Gbajabiamila offers self for investigation

THE Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila (APC, Lagos) has offered himself for investigation by security and anti-corruption agencies over alleged padding of the 2016 budget.

Former Chair of Appropriation Committee, Abdulmumin Jibrin (APC, Kano) had alleged Speaker Yakubu Dogara, Deputy Speaker Yusuf Lasun, Whip Alhassan Doguwa and Minority Leader Leo Ogor of illegally padding the budget with about N40b.

A total of 110,469 applicants have been shortlisted by the Police Service Commission (PSC) for the next phase of recruitment into the force, Chairman of the commission, Mr Mike Okiro, said yesterday.

The 110,469 are the lucky ones from the 338, 250 invited for the recent screening in the 36 state commands and FCT.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday bade the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) “good night” as the party plunged into further crises.

Speaking with newsmen in Jalingo, Taraba State capital, he said that he went to “assess” some of the projects started during his tenure “in order to grow the economy of Taraba and the country.”

The ride-sharing firm Uber will, for the first time, allow users to hail self-driving cars within a fortnight, the company has confirmed.

Uber said the launch would take place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It added that it was teaming up with Volvo.

At first, the vehicles will be supervised by a driver, who can take control if necessary, and an observer, Bloomberg reported.

The firm first revealed plans to replace human drivers two years ago.

Tencent has overtaken its rival Alibaba to become China's most valuable tech firm after strong results.

Tencent shares jumped by over 6% to a record high in Hong Kong after reporting strong quarterly earnings on Wednesday.

The internet giant said profit rose by 47% to 10.9bn yuan ($1.6bn; £1.2bn) in the three months to June.

Revenues surged due to growth in its online gaming business and advertising.

Out of China's three internet giants, the online gaming and social media company Tencent is now the biggest, but still least known in the West.

Tencent has not attracted the same global attention as its rivals: Alibaba, with charismatic entrepreneur Jack Ma at the helm, and Baidu, the local equivalent of Google.

"Revenues jumped, platforms are booming and it runs the Twitter and Facebook of China," an IG analyst said. "Investors are hoping that, like Facebook, they can turn active users into revenues."

About 13 inmates in Abakaliki Prisons in Ebonyi State and one prison guard were believed to have been killed in the early hours of yesterday, when the inmates of the prison rioted over the poor meals served to them by the prison and attempted to escape from the facilit.

During the riot, the inmates allegedly snatched a rifle from one of the guards in the prison yard and shot some at them, prompting the officials to defend themselves.

Lagos Ranked World’s Third Worst City to Live in

Lagos maintained its position at the lowest rungs of the Global Liveability index by ranking the third worst city to live in the world, according to the 2016 ranking by the Economist Intelligence Unit released yesterday.

Lagos placed 138th out of the 140 cities ranked in the latest liveability survey, just above war-ravaged Tripoli and Damascus.

“Of the poorer-scoring cities, 13 continue to occupy the very bottom tier of liveability, where ratings fall below 50 per cent and most aspects of living are severely restricted,” the report stated.

Continued threats from groups like Boko Haram acts as a constraint to improving stability in Lagos.”

Escalations in hostilities in Libya prompted a sharp decline in liveability in Tripoli, according to the report, while Damascus, although seeing a stabilisation in its decline remained rooted to the bottom.

The top five best countries to live in, according to the report, remained unchanged from last year. They are Melbourne, Australia; Vienna, Austria; Vancouver, Canada; Toronto, Canada; and Calgary, Canada.

The liveability survey assesses which locations around the world provide the best or the worst living conditions across five broad categories – stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.

Of the five categories, Lagos scored highest in culture and environment, followed by infrastructure. It scored lowest in stability.

Three other African cities joined Lagos at the bottom rung of the liveable cities, with Douala, Cameroun; Harare, Zimbabwe; and Algiers, Algeria; ranking 132nd, 133rd, and 134th respectively.

While no African city made it to the top 10 most liveable cities, five were in the 10 least liveable cities.

Steve Ayorinde, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, could not be reached for comments yesterday. Phone calls, text messages, and emails were not responded to, reported online news website, Premium Times.

The ranking of Lagos among the least liveable cities of the world comes amidst a massive revenue drive and huge infrastructure investment by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

The government generated N101.69 billion in the first quarter of 2016, N4.85 billion more than in the same period last year.

Lagos has consistently ranked in the 10 least liveable cities since 2011, ranking 137th out of 140 in that year. It ranked 138th in 2012, and then remained at 137th until this year.

Abisoye Taiwo, a 100 level student of Forestry and Wildlife Management of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) in Ogun state was reportedly shot today after a peaceful protest by students of the school degenerated.

The students were staging a protest over insecurity on campus as some robbers attacked some hostels in the school last night, killing a 100 level Banking and Finance student in the process.

The angry students decided to stage a protest this morning as the spate of robbery attacks had increased within the school premises in the last one month. They accused the management of the school of refusing to address the issue by providing them adequate security.

The students claim that a bullet fired by one of the police officers invited by the school management to restore law and order within the school premises, hit the 100 level student who died instantly.

All academic activities including FPY, PRACTICALS SHOULD be halted until a lasting solution is found to the state of security. The university authority should write a letter of commitment to extend their security responsibilities towards the student environment off campus. The management should compel the Commissioner of police to come down to the protest ground this morning. If these are not done, the protest will not end. The University gate will be locked.

President Buhari in crucial closed door meeting with former president.

President Muhammadu Buhari has received General Abdusalami Abubakar at the Presidential Villa.

The Punch reports that the former head of state is in a closed door meeting with the president and he arrived in a black Mercedes Benz car around 12.35pm. Abdusalami arrived for the meeting on Wednesday, August 18 and quickly went into the villa for a crucial meeting with Buhari.

The meeting is similar to a closed-door meeting the president had with former president, Goodluck Jonathan two weeks ago.

The former president also arrived for the meeting in a black Range Rover marked KWL 86 CN and was received at the forecourt of the president’s office by one of Buhari’s aides.

The South East Zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on Thursday August 18 2016, released N500,000 recovered fund to a fraud victim, Dr. Mrs. Veronica Ibeziako. Ibeziako, a retired Chief Magistrate in Anambra State, was swindled while she sort for financial assistance to enable her proceed for medical treatment abroad.

According to the victim, she was billed for a surgical procedure abroad, which was going to cost N3m, but ended up being defrauded of N500,000 when she decided to sort for financial assistance, due to her inability to come up with the entire sum.

Though investigations into the matter is still ongoing, the recovered fund has now been released to the victim, to enable her attend to her financial and medical needs.
